A clean, healthy pool is a beautiful and irresistible sight, just waiting for people to jump in and enjoy its cool, sparkling water. To keep your pool clear and inviting, though, you’ll have to be diligent about keeping up with preventive measures. Do you know these tips for keeping your pool at its best?
Keep the filter clean. Your pool filter is your pool’s first line of defense against dirt and debris. It’s a hardworking component, removing everything from microscopic matter to visible debris. Left untended, however, it can become a place that grows algae, which is then dispersed into your pool. Your filter can also become blocked or clogged with dirt, debris, scale, and oils, especially after heavy use or a storm. Clean your filter at least once a month and replace it as often as necessary.
- Properly circulate the water. In order to work effectively, pool chemicals need to be evenly distributed throughout your pool. During the swimming season, the pool water should be circulated at least 12 hours a day. Even during the off season, however, you should run the filter and circulate the water at least six hours a day.
- Brush and vacuum your pool regularly. if you have an automatic chlorinator and all the right chemicals, the tiles and walls of your pool need your help to prevent algae from growing on them. When you brush them, any algae that’s beginning to grow is released into the pool water, where the chemicals you have in place will do their job and stop it in its tracks. Even the best water circulation is not as useful for this purpose as a good brushing, so brush at least once a week.
- Test the water to make sure you’re maintaining the right balance. Keep the phosphates out of your pool to prevent algae growth, and make sure the pH is correct. When you keep the pool water balanced, swimming will be more enjoyable, and your products will properly protect your pool. Remember, the balance can be affected by several things, including the weather, the amount of use your pool is getting, and product application. Check the water at least once a week, either with an at-home kit or by taking it to your local pool supply shop.
- Make sure you know what you’re doing. Using the right products in the right way is the key to maintaining a beautiful pool and keeping everyone in the pool comfortable and happy.
